On Wednesday, October 9th the boys’ varsity volleyball team hosted a “Dig Pink” volleyball game to raise money for the Side-Out Foundation.
The team showed their support by wearing pink breast cancer elite socks to the game and raising money through a bake sale and donations. According to sophomore Collin Carrieri, the team “played the best we had all year.” However, after splitting two and two, the team lost in the 5th game. Erik Nidzyn said, “The team played well, but we needed more energy.”
Though the team did not win, they still made a positive impact on the lives of breast cancer patients. The Side-Out Foundation, established in 2004, is an organization that awards grants for medical research on breast cancer and provides support to patients and their families. So far this year, the foundation has raised a total of $107,468.97, and it’s all because of volleyball teams just like Westhampton’s, who raised over $400.
The foundation’s name comes from the situation in volleyball when a team wins a point while the opposing team is serving, thereby regaining control of the play. This demonstrates exactly what the foundation hopes to do for breast cancer patients, which is to help give them control of their lives.
Collin thinks, “It’s good that our school is a part of this because it helps let patients know that people are trying to find a cure for them.”
