Balancing work and school is a reality for some students at WHBHS who have a job during the school year. For most students, jobs are seasonal but others work year round.
Senior Rosa D’Agostino works four days a week at DSW, a shoe store in Riverhead. Rosa says, ‘‘If I’m working on a school night and I have a test the next morning, it’s a little hard trying to find time to study.’’
Sophomore Jared Percoco, who works at Michaelangelo’s in Eastport, agreed work affects school. “It does affect my school work because I have to go straight from sports to work and have no time for homework.’’
The stress of work for students like Jared just adds to the pressure of being on a varsity sport and taking AP classes.
Some students who only work on weekends don’t feel it affects school. Personally, I work at Buoy One throughout the year. It doesn’t affect my schoolwork because it’s on the weekends, but it does stink not being able to go to the Friday night football games!
Similarly, sophomore Gabby Saso works only weekends at Stone Creek Inn, a restaurant in East Quogue. ‘’It’s very time consuming but I love the people I work with and in the end the hard work pays off,” said Gabby.
Whether or not students like working, one thing is certain- the extra money makes it worth it.
With all the stress and hard work, where do students spend their hard earned paychecks?’ According to www.businessinsider.com, students in school spend most of their money on eating out, clothes, or saving up for college/cars.
