Many of our seniors are off to college at the end of the summer, but very few seniors are off to the Midwest! Choosing a college is a very difficult decision for students and location is definitely one of the most important aspects to finding their perfect match. So what made seniors Joe DiBenedetto, Kyle Rubin, and Marta Sadowska choose a school so far away and in the middle of nowhere?
Schools that are located in the Midwest of the United States are considered “Big Ten” schools. These schools are part of the oldest Division I college athletic conference in the United States. It has twelve member institutions – and Kyle, Marta, and Joe’s schools are included!
Kyle Rubin chose to go to Ohio State University. He chose a school of around 60,000 students. Kyle chose the Midwest because he thinks the people are really nice and he doesn’t really care much about the location. He’s excited about attending a Big Ten school because they have some of the best teams who play intense games. Kyle’s excited for all of the sports games, parties, and all the people he’s going to meet. He said, “Leaving is going to be sad, but I’ll deal with it and I’m sure I’ll have enough fun out there to forget about home. I guess I’m ready to leave.”
Marta chose to go to the University of Michigan. She told us that she chose a school in the Midwest because she wanted to be somewhat far away from home and Michigan was her dream school so she didn’t care much about location. She also said, “There is a lot of school spirit. I’m excited about meeting new people, taking interesting classes, and attending sporting events.” Marta doesn’t like spending money on plane tickets, but she is excited to be somewhere completely different and she is definitely ready to leave.
Joe DiBenedetto who is attending Indiana University with me in the fall, said that when he visited Indiana, he fell in love with how nice the people were, how beautiful the campus was, and how great of an atmosphere there was. He chose a Big Ten school because it’s the best conference in the nation. Joe’s excited to start his major in broadcast journalism and take it to the next level. He’s especially excited for the basketball games because “nothing’s better than Assembly Hall”. His sister went to Arizona, so being far away doesn’t scare him and he’s glad to have distance so he doesn’t have the option of coming home every weekend. Joe’s ready to leave, but not ready to leave high school because “it’s a bittersweet feeling”. Since Joe and I will be attending Indiana together, he said, “It’s going to be an adventure definitely and if it’s anything like the past four years, I seriously need to brace myself, but I’m excited about it!”
As excited as everyone is to leave for college, these three students are going to go through a big culture shock once they get to the Midwest and they can’t wait to begin their journey!
