It’s spring and softball season is here!! WHB Hurricanes are ready to fight for the county championships this year after a disappointing loss in the second round of playoffs in the 2024 season.
The expectations are high due to the returning players: seniors Rylee McGinness, Antonella Russo, and Kali Baumiller, and juniors Katie Burke, and Addison Celi.
Major position switches will play a big role in this year’s comeback. Katie Burke is switching from third base to shortstop, and sophomore Mckenna Gevinksi will be taking her spot at third when she is not on the pitcher’s mound. These position switches will benefit the team and help them progress further as this season unfolds.
The girls had many goals for this season. Senior catcher Antonella said “This year, since I am a senior, I want to help the team win and be successful but also just enjoy my last year with the girls and playing for WHB. I personally want to take the role of captain and lead the team and be the best role model I can.”
This year, the captains will be seniors Antonella Russo, Rylee McGinness, and juniors Katie Burke and Addison Celi. Being closer with the team this year is something that all of them are trying to accomplish.
Addison says, “Something I’m going to be doing differently is get more involved with my team. I think last season something we may have lacked was a good bond, so I want to have more team bonding. We already have a good bond as a team this year but I think more would be great for us.”
The team’s bond and the history they have together is one of the main components of the team’s talent, since most of the core players have been on the team since seventh and eighth grade. To keep up with WHB varsity softball follow on their instagram @whbvarsitysoftball!!
