Striving for greatness this year, the Westhampton Beach girls lacrosse team is back and hoping to be better than ever.
The senior class, having won the Long Island Championship in their freshman year, is determined to replicate that success in their captains’ final season.
They plan to take this season one game at a time. Coach Bergmann said, “Ultimately we want to get back to a championship game and the seniors want to attempt to bookend their career.”
The team has a new assistant coach, Coach Nat, who played at Adelphi and won two national championships there. According to Coach B, “She specializes on the attacking end and we are excited for her to help develop our attack into a high producing unit.”
The team is very determined and have been training all off season. Captain Reese King said, “This year’s team is experienced and excited to play with one another.”
On the weekend of April 5th, the team headed to Connecticut for their annual game vs. New Canaan, the number 4 school in the country. In overtime, WHB won 10-9.
Junior Dagny Beasley said, “This was a really big win. If we can beat the number 4 ranked team in the nation we have the potential to take on anybody.”
The biggest challenge in a short season is to block out the outside noise. Coach B said, “You have to focus on each game one at a time while not losing sight of our end goal. BUT we cannot let the end goal be too much of a focus that we lose sight of the next play, next goal, next save. I think mentally we need to not over or underestimate anyone including ourselves.”
