The WHB girls volleyball team is heading into the playoffs undefeated in League V for the first time since 2016.
This season brought big changes for the team, with former JV and varsity assistant Sarah Fabian stepping up as head coach and a new assistant, Mary Milano. Last season, the girls finished the season with a 4-10 record under Coach Ferrante. This year, the girls ended the season undefeated in League V with a record of 10-0. Coach Fabian said, “This season has been nothing short of extraordinary. Our team showcased remarkable energy, skill, and dedication to the sport, making it a truly memorable experience.”
The three senior captains, Shannon Sweet, Karly Pascale and Elliejean Burke, have played a big role for the team this season. Libero Elliejean said, “We are all super excited and confident going into the playoffs. We plan to go far.” All three have been playing together since East Moriches.
The team also includes seniors: Kenzie Gilbride and Makayla Vignieri, three juniors: Katie Burke, Ava Combuchen, Lauren Glynn, Mia Hill, Emma O’Came, and Jasmine Taylor, three sophomores: Evie Burke, Evelyn Kuroski, and Ellie Mett, and two freshmen: Reilly Moloney and Chloe Webb.
About the role the older players have on the new players, Coach Fabian said, “The younger athletes have gained valuable insights into the demands of varsity competition, learning from the seasoned leadership of their upperclassmen.”
Coach Fabian continued, “I had high hopes for this team and they have not only met but exceeded my expectations. The resilience our girls have exhibited over the past three months are nothing short of inspiring, and I wholeheartedly believe that this team will leave a lasting legacy as a beacon for the next generation of volleyball players in Westhampton.”
The team defeated Bayport 3-0 in the first round of playoffs on Wednesday, October 30th. On Saturday, November 2 they defeated Hampton Bays (3 seed) 3-2 in 5 intense games. This Thursday they face top seed Sayville in the County Championship at Hauppauge. Go Canes!.
