“The Hurricane Watch,” took home four awards from this year’s BASH Awards, held at Hofstra University. They won third place in the Newsday multimedia category, third place for Best Opening segment, and honorable mention in both Best Broadcast and Best Sports Package
What are the BASH Awards? BASH is a combination awards ceremony and learning conference for Long Island and Westchester high school students, teachers, and administrators enrolled in high school journalism and media production programs. This year (2024) was the largest and most competitive BASH to date, with over 1,000 students in attendance and 252 submissions.
Senior Chloe Mosher Said, “I thought the BASH Awards was a great experience for us broadcast students to have because we got to learn new skills and get recognized for all of our hard work throughout the year.”
Senior Nolan Michalowski felt the class’ unique format made us stand out. He said, “At BASH, I noticed that a lot of the other schools were following the same generic format for their shows. We don’t let formats or guidelines dictate how our shows are produced. We make our shows based on personality. Nolan also said, “I think the strengths of the WHB Hurricane Watch are that we work hard together, our shows are both informative and entertaining, and we stand out compared to other school’s broadcast journalism classes.”
Broadcast teacher Mrs. Mett was proud of the classes’ accomplishments. She said, “To be one of just three schools out of 40 who placed in four or more categories is very impressive, and it’s all because of the energy and passion the seniors showed up with everyday.”
Chloe was also proud of the awards. She said, “BASH was super competitive this year, with over 252 submissions from over 40 schools from New York. There were many schools in attendance that did not even receive an award, so we are super proud of ourselves for coming away with four.”
