After losing 18 seniors in the 2023 season, the Westhampton Beach varsity football team is looking to fill the open gaps of lost players. With many returners, the team is looking to get back to their peak, that being the Long Island Champions.
In a recent interview with Finn Drake, a wide receiver and safety for the Hurricanes, he said, “The goal is the same each year, and that is to be playing at Stony Brook at the end of the year.” Playing at Stony Brook meaning making it to the Suffolk County and Long Island Championship.
After coming off a tough loss to East Islip in the fall, WHB is looking to redeem themselves with a very fresh and new roster. “We lost a lot of main players to our team and were really bringing back only one starter, Brody Schaffer. There’s lots of roles that need to be filled but we do have the talent to make it happen. We just need to put in the work first,” said Drake.
Brody Schaffer, one of the only returning starters and a top 100 football player on Long Island last fall said, “As a senior this year, I’ll play more of a role as a leader and captain of the team. We have a very young bunch of kids so it would be great to keep them motivated and focused on the big picture, a run into the postseason and an LIC Title.”
As this is Schaffer’s 4th year on the WHB varsity football team he hopes to win it all this year and end his high school career on a high note. He said, “My dream scenario to end my career here at Westhampton Beach would be to have a championship. I also just want to have a good time with my friends. And I would also love to commit to play football in college by the end of this summer but we’ll see what’s to come.”
