On Friday nights, through rain or shine, the WHB cheerleaders show their Hurricane spirit. The group of 25 girls treats each other like family with good energy all the time, which makes them fun and exciting to watch.
This year the team has a new coach and is better than ever. Coach Alexa said, “I am honored to be in the position I am in and am grateful to help provide the team to victory this year.”
Captain Rosie Babcock is a four-year returning cheerleader. She said, “Leading the team with the other seniors was something I looked forward to since eighth grade. Now I am able to help the incoming girls and lead them to be the best they can be is an amazing experience.”
As a team captain, Rosie also has many responsibilities. “My responsibilities are telling the girls what to wear for games, in school and at practice, encouraging them while working out, cheering them on when getting new skills and at comps, and providing leadership and a positive attitude each and every practice.”
For being a newcomer to the team it might seem hard to keep up with the more experienced and older girls. The girls make sure that everyone is comfortable and all at the same pace. Freshman Weronika Mikucka says, “It’s not hard to keep up with the other girls. Most of us are on the same page. We all have a lot of fun and the team is like a big family.”
With the new changes, the girls are excited for their future as a team. Junior Lana Blowes says, “The new coach has pushed us a lot more and we are doing a lot more conditioning drills and workouts that will help us in the long run. She has pushed us to be our best and become stronger individuals and a stronger team.”
After the football season ends, the girls are looking forward to their competition season.
