One of the biggest controversies in varsity sports teams is allowing freshmen to play. Sarena Choi is challenging that controversy as the sole freshman on the girls’ varsity volleyball team.
Sarena Choi is a 14 year old freshman who went to East Moriches Middle School. Sarena has been playing volleyball for as long as she can remember and plays on the Long Island Blaze Club travel team.
Playing on varsity is tough and practices are intense at times. Sarena says that playing on varsity “is a lot of work, but is also a lot of fun.” She was very surprised when she made varsity and said that all of the upperclassmen were very welcoming to her. Sarena also adds her favorite part about varsity is all of the friends she has made.
Sophomore Maddie Neuberger says that Sarena “brings joy and a sense of fun to the team.” She also says that “she is really good hitter and and an amazing server.”
Some people believe spots on the varsity teams should be held by upperclassmen, only. According to The Petaluma Argus-Courier, freshmen are more common on girls’ varsity teams than boys’ and that the best players should be on varsity regardless of their age or class standing.
The Lady Canes are currently 6-3 and if you can make it out to a game Sarena is a outside hitter and she is number 5. Come support the Lady Canes at their last home game against Sayville this Thursday October 24th at 4:00 pm.
