The beginning of April means AP exam stress is rising for students at WHBHS.
This year, exams will be administered in school over two weeks: from May 5–9, and from May 12–16. AP classes are college-level courses offered in high school which give students the opportunity to earn college credit by passing the exam.
Most AP exams are two to three hours long. This year 28 out of 40 exams are digital. A testing device and a pen or pencil for scrap paper are the only material necessary for the digital exams. Tools within the test include a line reader, highlighter, and option eliminator. Reference sheets and a calculator will be included in the math and science exams.
To prepare for the AP English Language and Composition exam, Mrs. Schmieder is having students “practice multiple-choice sections and write each of the three essays in class and use AP Classroom to simulate what taking the test will be like on exam day.”
For AP United States History, junior Dagny Beasley said she is “studying the vocab of one unit every week until the exam” to effectively review the course material. Even with this review, students are still stressed.
Junior Cameron Giordano feels he is “preparing in the right way” and “on track to do well.” For AP Research, she has the presentation and final paper due in just one week counting as her final exam grade. The same goes for AP Seminar students.
Since juniors took the English Regents in January, there is no exam for AP English Language and Composition students following the AP. Mrs. Schmieder said, “My classes will study some classic literature like Macbeth and The Catcher in the Rye, as well as start drafting a college essay.”
While AP classes can be challenging, students still have their favorites. Dagny said, “My favorite AP class is AP Research because, while it’s challenging, it has taught me how to properly research and write a paper. This has not only improved my writing in other classes but will also be valuable in the future.”
Cameron said, “My favorite is AP Statistics, and I would definitely recommend it to others.”
Good luck on the APs WHB!
