On October 18 during the annual Pep Rally, seniors Shannon Sweet and Finn Drake were announced the 2024 Mr. + Ms. Hurricane, after votes from their classmates and nominations from their teachers.
Winning Ms. Hurricane meant a lot to Shannon. She said, “To me, winning Ms. Hurricane is an honor. It means I get to represent Westhampton Beach in so many different ways. I have put a lot of work throughout my last four years both academically and socially to be the best student possible. I also have a lot of younger family that will be coming through WHB at some point and being able to leave a positive legacy for them is something special I get to leave this school with.”
Regardless of winning or losing, however, Shannon said, “I knew whatever happened I was going to be happy regardless if I won.”
When hearing his name being called out for Mr. Hurricane, Finn had a rush of emotions. He said, “It felt really good and It was exciting, especially being joined and supported by my teammates on my football team and my friends.”
For Finn continued, winning Mr. Hurricane means “a lot to me because it is a great honor in the school and shows a lot about who you are as a person. It shows great pride in yourself throughout the community and all of the sports teams I am involved in. I’m very thankful for all the teachers who nominated me and the students who voted for me.”
To be nominated for Mr. and Ms. Hurricane students must be good in academic standing, and show a good work ethic with passing all classes. School involvement, participation in sports, and community service is necessary to be nominated. Lastly, having good attendance in classes since the is a big factor.
Congratulations to Shannon and Finn on being this year’s Mr. and Ms. Hurricane.
