Warmer weather is approaching, and with that comes the long-awaited spring break. WHB students’ plans include warm vacations, college visits, or simply a staycation.
Using spring break to visit colleges can help make college decisions easier. Junior Halle Geller said, “Over spring break I am visiting American, GW, Georgetown, UVA, and John Hopkins with my mom, stepdad, and brother. We thought it would be a good idea to explore some of my college options that I am interested in, and visit some family friends along the way.”
Be sure to sign up for official tours on the colleges’ websites. If classes are in session you will also get a better sense of life on campus.
Other students will be using the week to soak in some warm weather and get a break from Long Island’s uncertain weather. Junior Kara McCormack is heading to Miami. Kara said, “I need a much-needed break from school, and I need to make sure I have a tan for prom.”
Other popular spring break spots besides Florida include Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Bahamas.
A staycation is another great option for spring break. After a long run of schoolwork some students have decided to stay home and relax. Junior Lana Salvaggio said, “I plan to sleep a lot and hang out with some friends who are also staying home. Honestly, I just need a break from school.”
If you will be home over break, visit Quogue Wildlife Refuge. It is free of charge and open 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset.
Or, if the weather doesn’t permit you to be outside, go to the movies! Movie tickets at Island 16 in Holtsville range from around $24 for a regular movie and can go up to $35-$45 if you are seeing 3D or 4X. Purchase on the website and reserve your seats before you go!
Curling up with a good book is another option. Visit Barnes and Nobles in Riverhead or your local Library. Use the SSR list as a guide for titles and use the break to build some SSR credits.
Whether you are staying home, visiting colleges, or going on a much needed vacation, enjoy the time off over your spring break! It will be summer before you know it!
