A Look Into a New Class: AP Seminar
October 6, 2016
This year WHBHS has introduced AP Seminar, a new English class for sophomores looking for a challenge. “It’s a very rigorous course and it demands a lot of effort, but it really gives you a different perspective on controversial topics,” said sophomore Juliet Tomaro, a student taking the class.
This course is a part of the College Board Capstone Program, which has recently been added to many high schools. To reach the end goal of a Capstone Diploma, students will need take AP research as a junior and four other AP classes, for a total of six APs during their HS career and must score 3 or higher on each AP test.
AP Seminar teacher, Mrs. Wiles, said, “Truthfully, after seeing this curriculum and knowing first-hand what skills kids need to be college and career ready, this class is essential. I know that sounds like a canned answer, but the fact of the matter is kids will leave this class with real-life skills that they can use forever.”
For students wondering what the class is all about, Mrs. Wiles sums it up, “The class is about team collaboration, reading about current issues from all different perspectives, recognizing biases, forming opinions, changing your mind, opening your mind, learning how to methodically craft an argument and present that argument to a group. There are hard and fast AP deadlines, so we actually work at a pretty quick pace.”
AP Seminar student, Krysten Rohan, said, “If you want more knowledge and perspectives on the world’s issues, then yes, this class is for you.”
