Leaving old friends to make new memories, the class of 2013 may be feeling homesick. Former seniors Joe DiBenedetto, Sammi Vickers and Katelyn Ogeka shared what their first few weeks at college were like.
Whether attending a big, small, rural or urban school, studies from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania show that 15-20% of college freshmen are homesick in the first month of college.
Even though Joe, Sammi and Katelyn love their new schools they still miss being a Hurricane.
Joe, a freshman at Indiana University, said, “I’m not feeling homesick at all but there are definitely some things that I miss about home, like the beach, my dogs, my mom, my boys and D-stach.” Sammi, a freshman at Fairfield University, also said, “I’ve been keeping very busy with sports, school work and new friends.”
Social media really gives teenagers the upper hand when trying to keep in touch with old friends. Katelyn, a freshman at the University of Baltimore, said, “Of course I keep in touch with my friends, I miss them too much to not talk to them.” Joe also included, “I actually have a group chat with all my boys from back home and we all keep in touch and tell each other our stories about schoolwork, studying and definitely no partying.”
Even though college is a big change, WHB prepares students well for their new schools. Sammi said, “WHB prepared me extremely well for college. None of my freshman classes are too overwhelming or hard.”
No matter where the graduates of 2013 are, they will always be a Hurricane. Katelyn said, “I’ll come back to visit whenever I possibly can!” Also Joe added, “I’ll come back during main holidays and maybe a couple surprise visits here and there.”
