For freshmen, the change from middle to high school may be exciting, nerve-wracking, and scary. We checked in with Julia Delcolle, Reilly Dunning, Ryan Cumisky, Addison Colbert, Walker Jones, and Katy Federico to see how they are adjusting to high school life.
High school is the start of the best four years of our lives. We all came from three schools and joined together as Hurricanes. Freshmen Julia Delcolle said, “Coming from East Moriches was difficult because I didn’t know that many people and the people I knew weren’t in my classes.” Speaking from my personal experience East Moriches is such a small school with just 90 kids in a class that coming to Westhampton is an adjustment. Unlike Julia, Katy Federico has already been in Westhampton and said, “Adjusting wasn’t really hard, I think finding my classes was the biggest struggle.”
The classes we chose to take are a major part of our year. Reilly Dunning already has her favorite teachers and classes picked out. She said, “I like math with my teachers Mrs. Dimarco and Ms. Reed. I also like English with Mrs. Tunstead.” Her favorite thing about high school is the freedom and the new people she gets to meet but she doesn’t like going all day without seeing friends. Walker Jones’ favorite thing is also the freedom but he dislikes the amount of homework he receives.
Our school has many interesting clubs to offer. For some freshmen like Ryan Cumisky, there isn’t enough time in the day to join. Ryan said, “I do not plan on joining any clubs. I am on the football team so I am focusing on that and school.” Addison Colbert recently signed up from Friends For Friends and is excited to join more clubs later on in the school year.
Welcome Class of 2017! Have a good year.
