The boys tennis team has reloaded after their impressive season last year. After losing three seniors, they added five new players to contribute to their already impressive core.
Already 4-1 with an impressive win at Sachem, the team hopes to go far in the playoffs once again.
The expectations for the team have been set, as Head Coach Matthew Reed expects the team to repeat last year’s accomplishments, making at least the district semifinals.
The team is replacing five players from last year’s squad, and the ones to watch are definitely the freshmen Luca Caumartin and Ian Besser. Coach Reed said “They’re both young players, but they possess a lot of confidence, I think they’ll surprise teams this season.”
Junior player Bryce Groth also was high on Luca’s prospects, saying “He’s got a lot of topspin on his forehand.”
Groth also selected Senior Matt Moran as the player to watch. “He’s improved a lot since last year, and he played consistently well already.”
The team had many tough matchups this season, with one of the hardest against Harborfields, where the team suffered their first defeat of the season. The Ross School, a private school, is expected to be the hardest matchup of the year, as their school has the best facilities in the league. However, Coach Reed suggested that the “game to watch” was the home match against Shoreham on April 22nd. The team has suffered a defeat against Shoreham last year, and they are eager for revenge.
The tennis courts are also getting resurfaced after demand from the team, so the home courts will be better streamlined and will support better athletic performance. All in all, the boys tennis season looks to be exciting, with many rising players, tough matchups, and high expectations.
