The Canes girl’s basketball team is rolling, starting 4-1 and leading Suffolk V.
The girls have their sights on repeating as Suffolk County champions and making it back to the LIC game. Top scorers and Newsday’s top 100 Sandra Clark, Kate Sweet, and Jasmine Taylor are leading the way for this Hurricane team.
Currently, Sandra leads WHB with the most PPG and is also a top 15 scorer in Suffolk County. The team is averaging 50.8 points per game while only allowing 32.8 points per game. Westhampton recently lost an out-of-league game against Plainview 49-41 but looks to bounce back.
Starting shooting guard, sophomore Kate Sweet said, “I think we need to play at our own pace and not allow the other team to determine the speed of the game. At some points of the game, we let our opponent speed us up and rush our plays, causing us to not fully execute them.”
Coach Peters said, “We need to educate defensive principles and make sure we are doing the little things correctly, push the ball in transition, and continue to execute our offenses.”
The starting lineup includes Jasmine, Sandra, Kate and is rounded out with senior Shannon Sweet and freshman Chloe Blowes.
A young player to look out for on this hurricane team is freshman Mia Velez. Kate said, “She is a great offensive and defensive player that has no trouble scoring or causing turnovers.”
Coach Peters and the girls are looking forward to taking home their first-ever LIC for WHB girl’s basketball.
