The year 2023 was a successful one for some of WHB’s sports teams.
In 2022-2023 the girls varsity basketball team pulled up Kate Sweet, who’s in 8th grade, and this year they pulled in both Chloe Blowes and Mia Velez. Last year the girls made it to Suffolk County quarter finals, and they have big plans for this year. Many girls received awards from the Suffolk County Women’s Basketball Association. Coach Peters won League 4 Coach of the year. Sandra Clark received four awards including All league, league MVP, all conference, and all county. I caught up with sophomore and Captain Sandra Clarke to hear her thoughts on this upcoming season, and the young players. “Pulling up middle schoolers had made the team stronger and indirectly forced us as upperclassmen to be role models and more mature. We have to set a standard and make ourselves leaders and coaches on the floor.”
The boys varsity volleyball team made it to New York State finals for the first time ever, where they placed second. To accomplish this the boys won the Suffolk county championship, and the Long Island championship. Many of the sophomore and freshman JV players getting pulled up to play in finals which shows us potential for the next few years considering they have many young players. I spoke with Ben Donahue, a member of the varsity team on his view of the team this year, and what helped his team make it to NYS Finals for the first time ever” “Having trust in each other’s ability at the sport and learning what the other team is good at so we could stop their offense and have a better defense against our opposing teams.”
Girls Varsity tennis came in second in Suffolk County finals at a 4-3 loss but that was their one and only loss. We saw senior Julia Stabile and junior Matilda Buchen become New York State women’s doubles champions. As a whole the team came a lot farther than last year and although we see seven seniors leaving the team this year, we see a lot of potential in the younger players who really stepped up this year. senior and Team Captain, Kylie Way shares what helped the team make it this war. “We worked a lot on team bonding and chemistry, we had our skill levels up to par and had our basics down. I think it’s the fact that as a team we got close and wanted to get as far as we did. We made it to Suffolk County finals which is farther than last year, which we were really proud of. “
WHB sports have come a long way and were excited to see what each team will accomplish in the 2024 season. With some new faces, coaches, and even a new sport were excited to see that this year brings us.
