Hurricanes Look to Have Another Historic Season
March 30, 2023
For the first time in program history, the Westhampton Beach girls lacrosse team won the Long Island championship last year. This year, they look to stay the reigning champs. Will they live up to the hype?!
Senior captain Reilly Mahon said, “I am very confident in every girl on the field. Everyone is going to be an impact player.”
Coach Bergmann feels the same way. “Overall, I have confidence in our talent level and the trust the girls have in one another. The team gets along really well together and that’s something that isn’t always a given when you have 25 teenage girls spending a lot of time together.”
This season, WHB moved down to Class C, a class with very talented teams. Coach Bergmann said, “Moving down is really moving up. Class C is one of the best conferences in the country in my opinion. The level of play with the C teams is much higher and it will make getting into the playoffs this year a challenge for everyone in the class.” With this challenge in their way, the girls are looking to keep the same energy and momentum from last season to help them this year. Coach continued, “Part of being successful this year will be continuing the mindset that anything is possible. Every day we want to go out and get better and just take it one day at a time.”
While the team lost five seniors who made a big impact, there are almost 20 returning players. Coach Bergmann thinks that this is going to be very helpful to the team. “Having 19 returners is definitely a strength because we have a lot of girls who experienced our season last year and they are hungry to feel that feeling again.” Bergmann expects these returners to “give 100% every day, never give up, and support each other through the good and the bad.”
The girls started their season off strong by winning their first game 10-6 against Smithtown West. Follow @whbeachlax on Instagram to keep up with the dates and locations of the rest of the girl’s games.
