On September 12, 2013, the Harborfields Tornadoes took out the Hurricane Boys soccer team in a 1-0 defeat. On defense, the game was an even and hard fought battle throughout. Senior Matt Higgins and newcomer goalie, senior Ryan Burke, led the Canes’ defense.
Unfortunately, at the 10:07 mark of the first half, Burke let up his one and only goal on a great shot by the opposing team. It should be noted though that Burke did have his best game of the year and saved some great shots to keep the game within reach.. That one goal would prove to be detrimental though, as the Hurricanes offense struggled throughout the game, failing to get anything going. They had some opportunities and shots at the net but nothing would go in. The team also seemed to lack team chemistry and teamwork. Senior Captain Max Pastor agreed. “We have to communicate and work better together. Once we get that down then things will start to improve.” The Canes are a defensive oriented team, which they proved in holding Harborfields to only one goal, but lacked the offensive fire power needed to win the game.
On a positive note, underclassmen Luis Muralles. James Brezinski, and Jeffrey Schulz all showed some great play throughout as they are young players who will be leading this team in the future.
The loss leaves the team 0-1 in League play and 0-3 overall, Last year the team squeaked into the playoffs but lost to 1st seed Sayville in the 1st round.
The Hurricanes’ next matchup is at Comsewogue on Tuesday September 17. Comsewogue is coming off a 6-0 win against Stony Brook in their opener so the Hurricanes must find more ways the next couple of days in practice to score and come together as a team against the powerhouse. There is still plenty of time for the team looking for redemption in the playoffs to bounce back and start to get some wins!
The next home game is September 20, 2013 against Bayport-Blue Point.
