Throughout the year the wrestling team has been calling ourselves “The Dream Team” and after this year’s accomplishments we were definitely “The Dream Team.”
The Hurricanes overcame injuries, family tragedies and just about everything you could imagine on their journey to undefeated league champs. The biggest accomplishment of the season is easily the come from behind upset over the previously 3rd ranked and undefeated Rocky Point Eagles.
While most teams rely on their few core wrestlers, we were able to rely on every teammate. When one of our stronger wrestlers had a bad match there was always somebody who made up for it and lifted the team back up. This year’s team had many wrestlers that came out of nowhere and had huge impacts on the team.
When Coach Bass was asked what wrestlers surprised him the most, he said, “I knew our starters would do well but Danny Strebel, Jake Martin, Ryan Osborne and Dan Irving all came through in crucial matches when we needed them.”
Although we were League champs, we knew the league tournament would not be a walk in the park. League IV is one of the hardest leagues on the island and has great wrestlers at every weight class.
At the end of the tournament, the Hurricanes had 11 All-League wrestlers and three League champs which included Alex Tanzman, Peter Brocolli and Jake Martin.
After competing at counties Alex Tanzman won his second consecutive County Title. He will compete in Albany at the state tournament where he placed 3rd at 99 lbs last year.
