“Sam Leibowitz is a big Jewish bundle of joy,” said junior wrestler Devin Hogan when asked about his teammate Sam. This is a popular opinion about Sam, the most charismatic kid in the school.
When I asked Sam “what made him, him?” he immediately told me “height” with a laugh. We all know Sam for his height, but some things you might not expect about him is that he’s a very sensitive guy, he loves to go to the range and shoot, and can also play a little guitar.
There is definitely more to Sam than most expect. Born in Springfield Ohio, he moved to New York City at two weeks old with adoptive parents.
In Sam’s early life his parents had some cool jobs, both in the music industry. His mom was a manager of a band, INXS, and his dad was a lawyer for rock group Iron Maiden. During his summers, Sam said, he got to go on tour with INXS and also got to live in California.
It couldn’t have been the easiest childhood being with how big he is. That is one of the reasons that he chose to wrestle this year. His reason for wrestling this year was “People calling me names. I wanted to prove to people I could get in shape and silence my haters.”
He also hopes that wrestling will help him to pursue his military dream to go into the Army. But if that doesn’t pan out he would love to be a TV personality or a movie actor, which if any of you watch The Hurricane Watch you know he’s more than capable. There is no doubt that if he keeps going he’ll achieve his goal to “have fans and have my name be remembered.”
