LET’S GET READY TO RUMBLE!!!
It’s that time of year for the Hurricane wrestling team as they head into the season with an array of young talent. The team is going forward with only four seniors and 11 juniors, and is primarily underclassmen with 11 freshmen and 10 sophomores. Coach Paul Bass and assistant coach Tom Sheppard lead this group of young men.
Bryan Curry said, talking about the team this year, “we are very young and inexperienced but the team and I love the feel of being the underdogs and we are very excited about this upcoming year.”
Now that the season’s first tournament is finished, there are some wrestlers you might want to watch out for. The three captains, seniors Bryan Curry and Tyler Yastrub, and junior Christian Intorcia, lead the team of underdogs. Curry placed at leagues his freshmen year and was one of the WHBHS champions at Sprig tournament (160). Yastrub wrestled at 152 and 160 last season, and ended up placing forth in the leagues. He also was a Sprig champion (170). Intorcia was a quality wrestler last year while backing up Ronan Seltenreich (a graduate last spring) and put in a lot of work during the offseason, showed when he placed forth at Sprig (138).
Junior Alex Tanzman is another name to watch, the teams starting 99 pounder who wrestled at 96 pounds last season and won the league tournament, being the Canes’ final champion (99). The team ended up finishing 3rd overall at the tournament.
The team is in high sprits going into this season because of new key heavyweight players, senior Sean Ryan wrestling 220 and junior Sam Leibowitz wrestling 285 pounds. The team has been comprised of lightweight for the past few years so it’s very exciting to have new diversity.
The WHBHS wrestling team has a lot to hope for this year. There are a lot of young guys with a lot of enthusiasm and a few older guys with experience to help them learn. Come support us; it’s shaping up to be a fun year.
