WHBHS’ second annual Unified Field Day, held on June 7, was successful once again.
This event, organized by senior Haley Waszkelowitz and physical education teacher Mr. Davis, brought local schools together, including East Hampton, Eastport South Manor, and Southampton. It included different activities for students with disabilities. The Unified program runs it, which supports and engages in activities with students with disabilities throughout the school year during their physical education class.
The students participated in activities such as Spikeball, parachutes, freeze dance, and tag games. Around 60 students with disabilities participated from schools across Long Island and 35 students volunteered.
Haley said, “I am really happy with the direction this program is going, and I think it’s only growing. Unified Field Day is also just getting bigger and better with more experience, and we would love to host more schools in the future.”
To get involved in the program next year, you can contact Shannon Sweet or Antonella Russo, who said, “We are super excited to use the work of Haley and Laurette [Schaumloffel] to make the event the best it can be, and anyone who wants to contribute positively can get involved.” You can also join the Best Buddies Club. Ask your guidance counselors to get involved and help make positive change!
