After 18 years of teaching English, with 15 of those years at Westhampton Beach High School, Mrs Wiles is ready to trade in exams for beach days.
Mrs Wiles is sad to let this chapter of her life come to an end, but she is happy to create more memories outside of WHBHS. She thinks of retirement as bittersweet. As she is upset to not see her friends at work anymore or catch up with the students, she is most excited to no longer hear her 5 AM alarm clock each morning.
She already has many plans lined up for her life after retirement, including a trip to Kansas City with another WHBHS English teacher, Mrs Mett. She said, “We are going to see Travis Kelce play a football game, but we are really more excited at the chance to see Taylor Swift.”
Along with traveling, she is also excited to have free time to spend with her future grandchild. Mrs Wiles explained, “My daughter is due to have a little girl in the summer.” [Update: Her granddaughter was born on June 13th, Mrs. Wiles’ last day of teaching!]
Before teaching at WHBHS, Mrs Wiles taught English classes at William Flloyd, but after one year of teaching, she realized that she wanted a change of pace. After moving her career to WHBHS, she quickly grew love for the atmosphere, staff and students.
Staff and students are dreading letting Mrs Wiles go, as she made such an impact on our school, and lives. Mrs Luciano said, “I will miss having one of my dear friends just down the hall, and most of all I will miss our annual first day of school picture.”
Along with the staff, students will miss her dearly, as Mrs Wiles had an influence on many learning experiences. Antonella Russo said, “She was able to help me manage my assignments better, and help learn and prepare how to write professionally, but most of all she is super kind, easy to talk to and always there when I need her.”
Mrs Wiles will be missed, but hope she enjoys every second of this next chapter she so deserves.
