Starbucks Takes On Tea
Starbucks is most commonly known for its coffee, but recently, Starbucks has invested in tea. Starbucks has already taken their step in on this $90 billion market with purchasing Teavana tea, but they don’t plan on stopping there.
You are walking down a block in New York City, and what do you always see? Starbucks! Starbucks is practically everywhere in the city, and they are prepared to expand even further. Teavana, a tea company now owned by Starbucks is launching a series of tea bars where customers can enter, relax, enjoy their tea, and surf the web in a quiet environment.
According to The Tea Association of The USA, tea is the most widely consumed beverage in the world, next to water. Tea also has thousands of different flavors, which provides a large menu for tea consumers. This shows why Starbucks is eager to jump into the tea business.
Unlike a typical Starbucks shop, Teavana is designed for people to linger. “It’s hard to find a quiet place to hang out in Starbucks.” In an interview in USA Today, Allen Adamson, director of Landor Associates said, “This feels softer and less bustling.” When you walk into the shop, you see a shrine of tea, demonstrating Starbucks’ knowledge of the tea, even though they are new to the market.
The reason why Starbucks decided it was time to buy a tea company instead of adding tea to its own menu was the fact that coffee became too dominant and took over 99% of the sales.
Ultimately, Starbucks plans to launch over 1,000 locations in the next five years along with selling Teavana tea at Starbucks.
Go visit Teavana’s only current location next time you are in the city at 1291 Lexington Avenue
New York, NY 10028.
