Every Tuesday, Spanish teacher Mrs. Kearns holds yoga after school in the Wellness Center.
Yoga is a positive way of exercising and achieving peace that many have turned to an alternative or addition to exercise. Studies have shown that yoga can improve your overall well-being.
Mrs. Kearns, who holds teaching certifications in Vinyasa Flow, Post-Natal Yoga, Teen Yoga, Therapeutic Yoga, Soma Veda Thai, and SUP Yoga, practices six days a week and teaches at least once a week. This summer, she started teaching SUP Yoga through Island Surf. “SUP Yoga is a total connection to nature. It’s so relaxing and meditative. It feels amazing!” she said.
When Mrs. Kearns felt she needed to add onto her regular exercise routine she turned to yoga, falling in love with the “inner peace” she got from it. Yoga has helped her live in the present moment, breath by breath, without stressing out or overreacting to things.
Junior Morgan Ford agrees to the positive effects of yoga. She has only tried yoga a few times but from those experiences, she has felt at ease and relaxed. Junior Gillian Willis is also new to yoga, but said she has felt more at ease and hasn’t been as easily irritated since trying it. According to yogaminded.com, yoga has been proven to provide techniques for redirecting thoughts and calming the nervous system.
Yoga has also been proven to teach teens to make choices that respect themselves and others (yogaminded.com). Mrs. Kearns believes, “Behaviors and decisions made during adolescence have the potential to impact later life outcomes; choosing a healthy routine to de-stress can only impact teenagers in a positive way.” It has also been proven to improve decision-making in teens.
Mrs. Kearns’ favorite part of yoga is “everything!” She shared, “I love to experience the ‘internal’ results of my consistent practice.” It has improved her overall well-being and she has seen an improvement in maintaining her constant state of calm.
