A new gym rule has been made this year that is causing a lot of controversy.
In the past, students were able to jog the track, after which, we would either play soccer or walk.
The new rule is that walking for this quarter is no longer allowed – for freshmen and sophomores only! Most underclassmen have an objection to this new rule. Freshman Erica Rankin said,‘’ I am very upset I can’t walk the track just because I am a freshman. It makes other freshmen feel uncomfortable because of the older students.’’
The reason for the rule change is that gym teachers Mrs. Peters and Coach O’Brien made an observation that “underclassmen use peer pressure and walk just because their friends walk.’’ Mrs. Peters added, “We would like students to try different activities to see if they like them. If it was up to me there would be no walking.’’
Another complaint of students is that they cannot use their phones while walking the track. Sophomore Hailey Ciolino said, “I don’t understand why we can’t use our phones while we walk the track, it’s just like walking the hallway.’’
Coach O’Brien’s response to this: “The track is a classroom.’’
Whether or not you like these rules or not, everyone should take Mrs.Peters and Coach O’Brien’s advice and try new activities.
