Can you guess which WHBHS teacher has traveled to 15 countries and 18 states? This teacher has gone scuba diving (day and night) in the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, skydiving in Norway, and went on a helicopter ride through part of the Grand Canyon.
Hints: *It’s a woman. *She was not born in the US. *She is related (through marriage) to the MS principal. *Her first language is not English. *She really, really, really wants a dog.
If you guessed Mrs. Sedaño, you’re right!
Mrs. Sedaño teaches Spanish II and III at WHBHS and teaches Spanish to the fifth graders at WHB elementary. She’s also the advisor of the Spanish club.
But what’s most interesting about Mrs. Sedaño is her traveling history. Most people travel because they want to go somewhere warm or just want to get away, but Mrs. Sedaño and her husband travel “to see and experience new places and new cultures.” The Sedaños do most of their traveling in the summer because it’s when they can take longer trips.
She said, “My husband and I take turns picking places. Most of the places we pick interest us because of their natural beauty. We love to be outdoors and we get to really see the country by driving- a lot! We don’t stay in a place for more than two to three days.” She describes themselves as “nomads” so they can see as much as possible on each trip.
Other interesting excursions were to New Zealand, where she went ice climbing on the Fox Glacier in South Island and also went bungee jumping in Queensland South Island. In Alaska, she went guided bear viewing at Katmai National Park and also went whale watching in Kenai Fjords.
She continued, “All of our travels are ‘land’ based, no cruises- we get to see the country as if we were living there. We camp a lot. We bring our own tent or we rent a small RV. If we are in cities we stay in hotels. We feel that this the best way for us to experience the culture of each country.”
To travelers she offers advice, “Save your money! Buy a good backpack (Osprey is my favorite!).” The three items she could not travel without are a “camera (actually 2 to be specific: SLR and a pocket camera), wool clothes (Icebreaker, Smart wool, Ibex are some of my favorites) and face wash.”
Some people have a certain dream location but Mrs. Sedaño says “The entire world – really, I would be happy going anywhere.” Well she has a really good head start!
This upcoming February break she and her husband are going to Panama, and they are discussing where they’re going summer break. Mrs. Sedaño says, “I am a bit superstitious on divulging our choices. I’m just weird like that.” She told me she doesn’t even tell her sister or mom about it!
A majority of people think of teachers as boring or they don’t have a life outside of school. But teachers have interesting stories to tell about their life, all you need to do is ask!
