Spread peace, spread love, and grow hair; lots of it! The WHBHS Symphonic Choir was singing to you! They worked every day, during 4th period, to train their voices and on February 15th, the choir’s 95 students put on a show with a message under the direction of Ms. Czartosieski.
The two song selections? 1) Somebody to Love, a song by British rock band Queen, adapted by a vocal group named Glee, and arranged by Adam Anders and Tim Davis. 2) Hair: A Choral Medley, a combination of songs from the musical, Hair, which tells a story of a group of friends, living in the 1960s, choosing to speak up and sing out in celebration of love, life, and freedom. The piece was written by Galt MacDermont and arranged by Greg Gilpin.
“I had some students approach me with the idea of performing these two selections. So I thought, why not?” said Ms. Czartosieski. As she thought about the selections, she came to the conclusion that they were a lot more than just normal songs. They held meaning, especially in this time.
“With the music, I am hoping to send out the message that people can be healed through love. People are in economic trouble, we still have men overseas, and there are riots in Egypt. Let’s find the love in our lives and bring that love to people all around us,” she shared.
And on a lighter note, “The funniest thing that has happened while rehearsing for the Pops concert was when the chorus was singing the first song of “Hair,” We probably say the word hair about 30 times in the song. And as we started singing about hair, Mr. Ski walks in and everyone started laughing because we’re singing about hair while Mr. Ski has none!”
How did the students feel? According to Brittany Gest, she’s wasn’t too nervous for the concert because she knew the group could pull it off. “In order to prepare (for the concert), I usually just make sure I can sing (the notes) without looking at the sheet music.”
The students were really pumped for the concert just as much as Ms. Czartosieki was! Brittany really summed it up! “I think the audience is really going to love the concert. These are songs that a lot of people know and can sing along to!”
They all hope you enjoyed the concert. This group really knows how to sing!
