Spotify collects data through the year of lists of listeners’ top artists, songs, and genres. It is an unique and personal way to engage music listeners and to market their brand. Many sections in the Spotify Wrapped have special names every year.
A new feature was introduced for this year’s Spotify Wrapped, “Your Music Evolution.” It reveals the musical phases that uniquely define users’ years. People may receive up to three musical phases, which will be displayed with descriptors, genres, and artists. For example, “Breakup slow dance country season.”
This year, for many, Drake was the top artist or at the very least on their list of Top 5. He was ranked the 4th top artist globally following only Taylor Swift, The Weeknd and Bad Bunny. Sophomore Angely Bardales said, “Drake was my top artist ranked first every month.”
Most users would prefer their top artist to be configured by favorite songs, how many times their songs and albums are played, as opposed to most minutes listening to songs from the artist. They feel it’s unfair when the songs they enjoy are not featured as much due to them being shorter songs. According to sophomore Nico Arena, “My spotify wrapped was inaccurate because my Top 5 artists were inaccurate and I barely listened to those songs.”
To wrap, 2024’s Spotify Wrapped has come to an end with new features and many opinions. 2025 is just beginning, so let’s continue to look forward and see what this year’s music will bring to us.
