The Brewster Family: two spinster aunts who find joy in poisoning old and lonely men, a brother who believes he is Theodore Roosevelt, and a drama critic who must deal with his crazy, homicidal family. All these dysfunctional characters to came to life in WHBHS’s own production of “Arsenic and Old Lace” on November 9th, 10th, and 11th.
The cast of young and ambitious actors performed this well-known comedy thanks to the help of director Rosemary Cline, who is an avid actress herself. “I believe each director bring his or her training, life experiences, instincts and ability to work in the moment to the table. In my case I draw on my acting knowledge as much as directing,” said Ms. Cline.
Senior Tye Granger, who portrayed Lieutenant Rooney, said, “I love my director Rosemary. She really knows how to bring a play to life.”
It is rare that a freshman girl makes the show, but this year Claire Beaver and Anna Taylor both made the cut. “I thought that when I auditioned I wouldn’t get it! I was so nervous! I was so excited and I couldn’t believe I was selected to be the romantic lead,” said Claire. Claire played the role of Elaine Harper, the daughter of the reverend who falls in love with drama critic Mortimer Brewster, played by sophomore Chris Durst.
For four seniors, this is their final fall play at Westhampton Beach. “This is my last and my first fall play,” said senior Elizabeth Moore, “I’m just happy to be a part of it and wish I could have gotten involved sooner. It really is an amazing thing that I’ll be making the most of, and I’ll be sad to go.”
Senior Christian Tureski shared, “It is really sad to leave because I’ve done it for the past four years and it has become a huge part of me, but I know that there are better things to come in the future.”
Every actor has a pre-show ritual. When I asked these young thespians their rituals, I got some wacky answers. “I don’t know why, but before going on stage, I always check the pockets of my costume. The first time I did it, my friend found $20,” junior Jack Vicari said. Sophomore Chris Durst likes to sing and senior Rachel Rienecker likes to listen to music, especially the Rent soundtrack!
Congratulations to the cast and crew of “Arsenic and Old Lace” for three outstanding performances!
