Christmas music: joyful and spirited, or overly annoying? For many people, Christmas music is something to adore, but for others it is something that is played too early and repetitive. If I were to walk around the school, there’s no doubt that many students would know the lyrics to at least one Christmas song, but is it because the songs get stuck in your head or because you actually like them? Let’s see what the favorites are at WHBHS.
Senior Michael Polan’s favorite Christmas song is “White Christmas” and his favorite artist is Josh Groban. For senior Tara Boeshore, her favorite song is “All I Want for Christmas is You” because it has a good beat. Sheel Patel loves “All I Want for Christmas is You” too because “honestly Kristen, all I want for Christmas is you.”
Senior James Lenihan says his favorite song is “’Run Run Rudolph’, the Chuck Berry version, because I always listened to it as a kid.” Junior Sammi Vickers and senior Haley Laube enjoy “Jingle Bell Rock” because it’s fast and catchy. Senior Connor Raynor says his favorite is “either ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ or ‘White Christmas’ because that’s how I love the holidays, a winter wonderland!” And Seniors Alix Suter and Reid Paoletta prefer “Christmas in Harlem,” a more modern twist on Christmas music.
On the other hand, there are just some Christmas songs that just make us want to change the station immediately. Michael Polan hates “Dominic the Donkey because it’s completely irrelevant and annoying.” Some may not agree, but Tara Boeshore dislikes “the ‘Grinch Christmas Song’ because it’s stupid and does not have a pretty singing voice.” “Feliz Navidad” is Sammi Vickers’s least favorite song because she has no idea what it’s saying while Reid Paoletta hates anything from Justin Bieber’s Christmas album because he likes the Mariah Carey album better. Senior Sheel Patel hates “’Santa Clause is Coming to Town’, because he’s really not.”
As we all know, Christmas music doesn’t have too much variety in their song choice. Tara gets sick of Christmas music “because it’s all the same songs. They need to make some new ones!” When asked if the music is played too early, Michael says, “It’s on the radio so you can choose to listen to it or not. Just don’t listen to it if you think it’s too early.” Similarly, Alix Suter believes it’s not played too early. “It should be played all year long! It’s just so jolly!” On the contrary, Senior Connor Raynor believes it’s played too early, saying, “Give Thanksgiving a chance! It wasn’t even Thanksgiving and I was hearing Christmas music.”
Overall, it’s safe to say that WHBHS is crazy about those carols. Even though it’s overplayed, we can’t help but sing along and get into the Christmas spirit! Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la….
