The happiest people in life are the givers, not the getters.
This holiday season, math teacher Ms. Kalisak is once again organizing Adopt-a- Family families in need in Westhampton Beach.
Adopt-a-Family is a program run through the Immaculate Conception Church in WHB where families are matched with a sponsor who purchases gifts and/or gift cards to provide seasonal gifts and necessities for the family. Adopt-a-Family provides food and gifts to about 100 families each season.
Ms. Kalisak said, “Adopt-a-Family has always held a special place in my heart. As a child, my brothers, friends, and I helped my father with the program, assembling food baskets and loading cars for those delivering presents and meals. After he passed away 10 years ago, I wanted to continue to give back to the community my father had loved so much, so I took over the Adopt-a-Family. It’s been a way to honor his memory while continuing to support families in need during the holiday season which I do truly enjoy.”
WHBHS and Key Club are two WHB clubs involved with this program using money they raise with fundraisers to adopt families.
The student government advisor, Ms. Mett said, “We raised $1000 for Adopt-a-Family through the Powderpuff game and we are adopting two families for a total of 10 people.”
The key club held weekly bake sales on Wednesdays that help raise money for the gifts.
You can join Key Club and Student Government if you are interested in being involved to help out families in your local community. For more information on Adopt-a-Family [email protected].
