This September, Ava Derby announced her verbal commitment to play D1 lacrosse at the University of Maryland.
It is safe to say Maryland got the best! Varsity lacrosse coach, Mary Bergmann, described Ava as “a competitive player who constantly gives 100% and leaves it all out on the field.”
Coach Bergmann has always envisioned Ava going to a top school like Maryland that is known for their exceptional and storied lacrosse program. In 7th grade, when Ava was brought up to varsity lacrosse, everyone knew she was destined for greatness. Ava is a team leader, with a constant drive to win, Coach Bergmann said, “When she sets her mind to something she will keep working until she achieves it.”
After starting lacrosse in 4th grade, which is considered late, Ava’s exceptional talent for the sport was a shock to most. Ava also plays for the Long Island Yellow Jackets – Manning, as a midfielder.
Ava described Maryland as her “dream school” and will be majoring in business and minoring in marketing. Ava has always had interest in Maryland, even though her first time at the school was for her official visit. Her favorite parts of the school were the coaches, players, and the team’s successful history.
One of the most driving factors that solidified Ava’s desire to commit were the coaches and current players on the team. According to Ava,“ I loved all the players and coaches, they were so welcoming and made me realize that Maryland is where I want my future home to be.”
Ava is loved by her community, teammates, coaches, and school. She expressed her thankfulness for all of the overwhelming support and congratulations from everyone. Ava can not wait to begin her years at Maryland. Ava has always set goals for herself and wants to thank all of her coaches for their support and motivation, especially during the recruitment process.
Make sure to keep along with Ava’s lacrosse career and for her transition into D1 college lacrosse, in the fall of 2026!
