Welcoming Westhampton’s New Athletic Director

Athletic Director Mr. Cohen

Westhampton Beach welcomed a new athletic director, Mr. Cohen, to Hurricane Nation this year.
Before becoming head of athletics at Westhampton, Cohen was an assistant principal at Islip, as well as a gym teacher, athletic trainer, and summer administrator. He has a Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Hofstra, Master of Arts in physical education from Adelphi, and Advanced Graduate Certificate in Educational Leadership from Stony Brook University.

After receiving his graduate certificate, Mr. Cohen said, “I knew the only position I wanted to hold was as an Athletic Director.  I also knew I wanted to be a part of a small town community, and when the WHB position opened I seized the opportunity.”

When WHB’s former athletic director, Mrs. Masterson took a position with East Hampton, Cohen had the opportunity he was waiting for. Following in the footsteps of Mrs Masterson could be intimidating, but for Cohen, it was not.  He said, “I would not say that it was intimidating.  Mrs. Masterson had a long successful career here and people knew her and how she worked.  As the new person it takes time to build those relationships and develop trust and understanding.”

Students and staff at Westhampton may not notice some of the changes Cohen is making – yet. Cohen said, “Many of the changes I have made are smaller internal changes, looking at ways to improve communication with families and promote our health, P.E. and athletics programs.”

He also said, “As I build relationships and develop a deep understanding of the school culture I look forward to working with stakeholders, not to change but for continued growth and success.”

Something you may not know about Mr. Cohen is that he’s a New York Giants and Islanders fan. He has a signed autographed NY Giants Superbowl hat in his office.

Mrs. Nigg, Mr. Cohen’s secretary, had to adjust to the change of a new “boss” as well. As they work together every day, she learns more about him. “I am just getting to know him as a person and what he expects of me while we work together,” Mrs. Nigg said.

She was reluctant to work with a man after years of working with Ms. Masterson. “He is a really nice guy. I was hesitant – I didn’t know how it would be working with him. He is easy going, and easy to work with.” As things begin to settle in, Mrs. Nigg is delighted with the change.

We welcome Mr. Cohen to WHB.  Go Canes!
