Getting To Know Rosa

Grace McGowan, Staff Writer

Without the help of the security guards, our school wouldn’t feel the same. One of those security guards is who we all know as Rosa. Whether you’re having a bad day or a good one, Rosa makes sure to put a smile on everyone’s face that she sees.

Before coming to WHB, Rosa served three years active and three years reserved in the Army (1981-1987). She worked as a PL clerk, which meant she worked in the motor pool, ordered supplies and other parts for vehicles. Also, Rosa worked as a security guard at Riverhead High School before WHB. She started there in 2002 as an all-call guard until 2005 when a co-worker told her that WHBHS was looking for help, so she worked both jobs for a little while.

Aside from WHBHS, Rosa works a second job. She works at Little Flower services, helping adults with special needs complete daily tasks. She shared that eventually, her patients become family from being with them for so long.

As we all know Rosa is one of the most beloved security guards here at Westhampton. Ron Gholson, who has worked with Rosa for about 15 years now, says she is very positive and has a caring spirit. “She is a problem solver and the calm of the storm.”

Rosa says her favorite thing about working at WHB is “my interactions with the kids. They keep me young at heart.” Student Adriana Zukas said Rosa always has a happy spirit and greets everyone with kindness. “Rosa would always make me laugh when I saw her and said good morning to me everyday ,which doesn’t seem like much but always made my day.”

If you see Rosa be sure to say hello.  She will certainly brighten your day! Thank you for all you do for the WHB community, Rosa. It is appreciated by all the staff and students.
