Saying Goodbye To Our Seniors: Scholarship Night

Senior year is coming to a close for most of us, and we stop to wonder where the time has gone. During our last few months, we have been given many events to congratulate us on our accomplishments, such as the Academic Awards Dinner, and the Sports Awards Dinner. Another very important event for the senior class is Scholarship Night. Scholarship Night is a kind of a “right of passage” for seniors, as there are a select group of students who have taken the time to apply for and have been selected for these specific local scholarships. Scholarship Night makes us remember the feelings of satisfaction, relief, and gratification of Senior year, and reinstates the merit all of the sacrifices we have made during our time at WHB to get where we are today. It is a night where we realize that all of the work we have put in for the past four years has been worth it.
This year, Scholarship Night was held on Thursday, May 28th, at 7:00, in the district auditorium. After much anticipation, and still being unaware of the scholarship (or scholarships) they received, the students filed in with family and loved ones to be commended for all of the hard work. Nearly every seat was filled with friends, parents, grandparents, and other family members.
Senior Elizabeth Goldfarb received two scholarships at Scholarship Night. Living in East Quogue since she was a baby, Goldfarb attended East Quogue Elementary. Her kindness and welcoming personality has had an obvious impact on her teachers and those around her, as she received The East Quogue PTA Scholarship and the East Quogue Teachers Association Scholarship. Although an interview was not required, she did have to write an essay for each scholarship: “For the East Quogue PTA I had to write an essay about three objects that I would bring when traveling another country and trying to explain what East Quogue is like. For East Quogue Teachers Association Essay I had to write an essay about my East Quogue experience and how it changed me and I will use it to make me a better person. For both I also had to attach a resume and transcript.” Goldfarb will be attending Oneonta State College in the fall.
Zachary Davonski was one of the students who received the most scholarships that night, as he was awarded the Friends of Ambulance Scholarship, Cor-j Scholarship, Quogue Association Scholarship, Quogue PTA Scholarship, and the Millard and Rowena Jayne Memorial Scholarship. In applying for these 5 scholarships, Davonski needed to write multiple essays, send in resumés, and attend interviews. Luckily, Davonski described this process as “relatively easy”, and “worth all of the work”. Davonski received all 5 of the scholarships that he applied for, which is quite the accomplishment! In the fall, Davonski will be attending the University of New Hampshire.
Seniors, congratulations! Juniors, get ready, and don’t give up! This time next year you will be gearing up for graduation, and will be ready to head off to college in the fall. Your senior year will fly by in the blink of an eye. My advice would be to take each day as it comes, soak it all up, and most importantly be proud of yourself! Again, congratulations to my fellow seniors. We made it!
