With perfectly coordinated outfits, effortlessly paired with skinny ties and sleek designer shoes, not to mention the flowing black mane, he has the physique of a personal trainer and the charisma of a champion collegiate athlete. This is the man you pass day after day in the halls who has no time to stop and chat, and is possibly on his way to a Lacrosse Unlimited photoshoot. This is the man you wish you knew more about, and more importantly, the man you wish you were. This is Mr. Cody Hoyt.
It takes a lot more than superhuman athletic ability and flawless teaching skills to do what Mr. Hoyt does. Sadly, few people know the real man behind the BMW 3-series and well-structured health curriculum. This is a man who enjoys “… biking, watersports, and reading,” in his spare time. When not at school or on the field, “I work out about 5 days a week and I’m taking other classes, so I have homework for that – I’m always preparing for coaching and teaching.”
However, for someone who has been dubbed the ‘guru’ of the weight room, Mr. Hoyt is a sincere, motivated, and above all, humble individual who says his motivation comes from his students. He feels, “They keep building my self-esteem. A lot of the motivation comes from within, from people having doubts, and wanting to prove them wrong.” Quite the competitive individual, it appears. Certainly this competitive nature had something to do with his winning the NCAA Division III national lacrosse championship… twice.
Naturally, one might wonder what it is that fuels the unstoppable force that is Mr. Hoyt. How is one man able to fulfill the demands of being the JV soccer coach, Varsity lacrosse coach, and a full-time teacher? The answer is simple: “Time management. Find time to do things that make you happy, that you enjoy, or else things just become overwhelming.” It may seem that Mr. Hoyt’s successes, although innumerable, all can be credited to his incredible organization and skillful time management.
From what he deems to be greatest achievement, “being able to play lacrosse at a high level and graduating in four years,” to the “two national championships, which are just icing on the cake,” Mr. Hoyt has had a source of inspiration every step of the way. His support, as with many high school and college students, came from his family. His parents, who were “…always a big influence and motivated and encouraged me in sports and school,” definitely fueled his competitive drive and determination. Being born as a biologically superior human being probably has something to do with it too.
Such a prosperous and experienced individual must have some suggestions for the students of WHBHS, right? No. This is Mr. Hoyt we’re talking about. He has universal advice. As a health teacher, he is well-versed in all areas of fitness and healthy lifestyle choices, and his poignant words of wisdom can be beneficial to everybody. Whether you’re a musician, athlete, artist, or thespian, ”Find activities you enjoy doing. No one has to have an intense exercise nutrition program. Moderation is key, and so is finding what you’re comfortable with as an individual.” More importantly, live by the eternal words of Mr. Hoyt, and “Stay away from Oreos®… especially Double Stuffed.”
